June 27, 1967 – NOLEN RETIRES

John Nolen, more a Bonner county institution than a mail carrier, retires from his star route on June 30. Nolen began his career on the star route in 1938. Prior to that, the steamboat brought mail, groceries and passengers to points along the lake.

WEST POINT CHAPEL IS WEDDING SCENE

Miss Sue Ellen Dawson and 2nd Lt. Val Duane Millard were married on June 7 in the West Point Chapel at West Point, N.Y. The bride is the daughter of Allen R. Dawson of Clark Fork and Mrs. Bonnie Eller of Sandpoint. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Millard, Dover, are the groom’s parents.

DOG TRAPPED CHASING BUTTERFLY

A small dog belonging to the Marvin Hegstad family, 920 Main St., was in a playful mood Monday and while chasing butterflies, tried to follow one through a short length of drain pipe but didn’t make it through. Mrs. Hegstad notified police that the family was unable to remove the dog from the pipe, or the pipe from the dog. Officer Howard Scott responded, then radioed back to the station for help, and finally, with the assistance of Chief George Elliot and a quart of motor oil for lubrication, the dog was released.

June 27, 1917 – PHONE STRIKES ENDS

The Idaho panhandle telephone strike ended Monday, with an agreement reached between the Interstate Utilities company and the strikers. Linemen will receive $4.50 a day, compared to a former $4 wage and demands for $5. Operators will receive minimum wage of $35 for beginners, to increase to $60 monthly after a year’s service.

TO ENFORCE SPEED ORDINANCE

The matter of reckless auto driving in the city was briefly and decisively discussed at the council meeting Monday, where the police were instructed to rigidly enforce the ordinance relating to the same without respector of persons. They were told to even arrest the mayor should he be found exceeding the limit.

146 MILES IN SIX HOURS

R.G. Prichard, local agent for the Elgin six motor car, accompanied by Spokane agent R.W. Snow, made a round trip between this city and Spokane, a distance of 146 miles, in six hours.

CITY BREVITIES

The fire department was called to extinguish a small attic fire at the home of E.L. Colomb, 514 north Ella, Saturday night. Damage to the house, which was slight, was covered by insurance.

The Jennestad & Larson company, 209 N. First, are having their front show windows enclosed in a casing of beaver board making a neat improvement at the popular store.
