MOSES LAKE — A former reporter and television news anchor will be challenging Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Yakima, for his seat.

Democratic candidate Christine Brown, who worked in the television news industry for 30 years, recently announced her plans to run against the two-term representative.

“Our campaign will be talking about shared progressive Democratic values that will help make government work for all of us. We will encourage people who have not participated to take a stand, that this fight is worth it,” Brown said. “We all need to recognize that Democracy is really what is at stake and every single American must vote.”

Brown said the major reason she is running is because she is of the belief that for the first time in American history the next generation of Americans will not do as well as the previous generation. She says the Republican Party is currently making decisions to benefit the wealthy and large corporations. She slammed Newhouse for not proposing improvements to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but noted he voted to repeal it and went on to support the “disastrous” Republican response to the ACA, the American Health Care Act.

“Under this plan, the wealthiest Americans get huge tax breaks while 23 million Americans would lose coverage — that's about 85,000 of our neighbors in the 4th District,” she said. “And the plan opened the door again to excluding people with pre-existing conditions. This approach to health care does not help you. Republicans are willing to put profits for insurance companies and tax breaks for the wealthy over access and costs for the rest of us.”

Brown said that as long as Republicans have control of the House, there will be no consideration of diverse opinions.

“It is time to restore the balance of power in Washington D.C. and make sure we elect leaders who will fight for us. I am running to represent the unheard voices of the 4th Congressional District.”
