BOISE — The St. Maries Lumberjacks didn’t shoot the ball all that well in Saturday’s state 2A third-place game at Capital High.
But that defense, well, they win trophies.
Jake Sieler had 13 points and six rebounds and Brady Martin had 11 points and seven rebounds, leading the Lumberjacks past the New Plymouth Pilgrims 49-24.
“We didn’t shoot the ball great,” said St. Maries coach Bryan Chase, whose team finished 18 of 54 from the field. “But our defense was stifling and played a lot better. It was one of our best performances of the year on that end and I was really proud of the boys for coming back.”
New Plymouth was held to 5 of 41 shooting, with Riley Harris being held to five points after scoring 25 in the team’s opening round win against Firth on Thursday.
“We challenged Dakota (Wilson), who’s been our stopper all year on defense and he locked him down the entire game,” Chase said. “It’s a big tribute to Dakota for coming out to play like that.”
St. Maries finished third in 2015, with many of the same players on the floor again on Saturday.
St. Maries finishes 14-5, while New Plymouth ends 13-12.
