COEUR d'ALENE — A man who allegedly raped two women on the same evening at his Coeur d'Alene home had his first appearance in court Monday.
Steven Garrett Bruna, 20, was officially charged with both counts of rape, one of which involved a victim under the age of 18. His bond is set at $220,000.
A victim contacted the Coeur d'Alene Police on Thursday morning, according to the department, saying she was forcibly raped by Bruna the previous evening. During the investigation, detectives contacted a second female who was at Bruna's residence and reported a similar encounter earlier that evening.
Bruna, who doesn’t turn 21 until August, had a warrant out for his arrest for the alleged crimes and turned himself in Saturday.
He recently tweeted about alcohol and marijuana use.
“40s & blunts. Mi casa tonight. Hml.” Bruna tweeted Feb. 16.
Hml typically means "hit my line."
Detective and Public Information Officer Jared Reneau told The Press he could not provide any more details as the case is still under investigation.
Bruna has an extensive criminal history which includes multiple domestic violence cases, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and probation violations dating back to his days as a juvenile in 2010.
Just this past August, Bruna was charged with domestic battery and second-degree kidnapping of his then-girlfriend. He posted $25,000 bail before pleading not guilty to both charges. A jury trial on those charges is set for April 17.
According to a police report, the couple got into an argument before Bruna slapped the victim, covered her mouth and proceeded to punch her multiple times.
The victim tried to leave Bruna's bedroom for nearly an hour, according to the report, but he physically prevented her from leaving.
"(Victim) said she couldn't breathe he wouldn't move his hand. (Victim) told me she bit his hand and, after this, Steven apparently bit her on the cheek. At some point during the incident, Steven punched her in the face two or three more times," the police report read.
In October 2013, Bruna was charged with domestic violence with traumatic injury, a violation of his probation. The charge was later amended to battery. No details of the juvenile case could be provided, per Idaho law, but he was convicted and sentenced to 180 days in jail. He was credited 96 days and 15 days of the sentence were suspended.
