Bonner County braces for flood impacts

SANDPOINT — Bonner County commissioners issued a disaster declaration Thursday amid a flood warning from the National Weather Service.
The weather service issued a flood warning for eight counties in northern Idaho and eight counties in northeastern Washington. It remains in effect through noon on Sunday.
The agency’s Spokane bureau reported that another round of moderate to heavy rain will begin falling today and continue through Saturday. The anticipated runoff from the rain event is expected to result in small stream and field flooding.
“Our unusually wet and snowy winter has raised the water table unusually high over north Idaho and a large portion of Washington. Flooding is ongoing in many areas,” the advisory said.
The weather service added that any additional rain will likely exacerbate current conditions.
In addition to small stream and field flooding, several rivers in northern Idaho and eastern Washington are rising as melting snow works through the system, NWS said.
The flood warning pertains to the Idaho counties of Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, Shoshone, Benewah, Latah, Nez Perce and Lewis. It also applies to the Washington counties of Pend Oreille, Stevens, Ferry, Whitman, Spokane, Okanogan, Asotin and Garfield.
Bonner County commissioners said the resulting flooding has the potential to cause mudslides, and damage to roads and levees. In addition, rising lakes, rivers and streams have the potential to endanger life, property and structures.
All relevant county departments are engaged in flood mitigation efforts, commissioners said.
Rain is expected to spread over the region on Friday and increase on Friday night and Saturday morning. Drier and cooler conditions are expected on Sunday and Monday, but another mild and wet pattern is forecasted into the weekend.
“Flooding has the potential to be a concern in the Inland Northwest for more than a week,” the National Weather Service said in the flood warning.
