WARDEN — Warden had practiced less than five times outside.

Defensively and from the mound, the Cougars did not look too rusty. Coupled with a few big innings at the plate, Warden opened its season with a two-game sweep of Cle Elum-Roslyn 10-2 and 8-0. Game 2 was called in the fifth inning due to darkness.

“We had a couple errors... We can live with that simply because, one, it’s early, two, they were made by young players and, three, more importantly, this is only Day 4 for us outside,” head coach Dan Caballero said. “We haven’t been able to get outside and do anything... It was just one of those things where if we can get outside a little more we can see some live pitching on the field and things will improve for us.”

The Cougars thumped the Warriors 10-2 in the opener and broke the second game open with a five-run second innings. Wade and Wyatt Visker hit a triple apiece to kick-start the rally. J.R. Delgado ripped a double to left-center field and later scored on a single by Wyatt Visker in the fourth inning.

Cle Elum hoped to avoid a shutout after loading the bases with one out in the fourth inning.

However, reliever Robert Arredondo recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.

“He today stepped up and challenged them, threw strikes,” Caballero said. “I was really happy with the way he threw. He’s one of those kids that is just going to get stronger and hopefully he keeps that focus and that drive and he can build on this success.”

Warden hosts first-year program College Place Saturday. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

Boys soccer

Cascade 4, Quincy 1

QUINCY — Arturo Avila recorded a hat trick, leading Cascade over Quincy 4-1.

The Jacks’ Danny Cruz scored the game’s first goal in the sixth minute before the Kodiaks scored four unanswered.

“Going to be a good learning opportunity for all of us,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said.

The Jacks pounded 11 shots, but could only get the one early goal.

“We just could not get it in the net,” Guerrero said.

Royal 3, Mabton 2

ROYAL CITY — Despite a lack of energy and playing against the glare of the sun, Royal dispatched Mabton 3-2.

The Knights led 3-0 in the waning minutes before the Vikings scored two late goals after a group substitution.

“Our Varsity kept them quiet, but they proved their quality by easily running through our young boys with speed and strength,” head coach Jens Jensen said. “They scored two goals nearly back-to-back.”

Antonio Barragan, Alex Contreras and Michael Rojas scored for the Knights.

Othello sweeps Wahluke

MATTAWA — Othello did not drop a single set as the boys and girls swept Wahluke 5-0.

Wahluke was forced to forfeit three matches.

Zoee Roylance defeated Lluvia Mendoza in the No. 1 girls singles match 6-1, 6-2. Tanaya Andersen and Katie Walker led the Huskies from the No. 1 doubles spot, winning 6-1, 6-1.
