The timing was right for Coeur d’Alene High junior quarterback Colson Yankoff.
On a week when he was named to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, he opted to join another outfit starting in 2018.
And it’s a pretty good one to boot.
Yankoff (6-foot-4, 200 pounds), verbally committed to the University of Washington football team on Wednesday afternoon. He received a scholarship offer from the Huskies on Wednesday morning.
“Washington has always been one of my top three favorite schools,” Yankoff said. “When it became an option, I really wanted to go there. The athletics, academics and facilities speak for themselves. It just felt like a good fit.”
Yankoff plans to enroll early at Washington, starting classes in January. The Huskies, led by sophomore starting QB Jake Browning, advanced to the College Football Playoff last season, where they lost in the semifinals to Alabama.
“The fact that they finished the way they did didn’t hurt the cause,” Yankoff said. “I really loved the school, but that finish is the icing on the cake.”
Yankoff verbally committed to Oregon last summer, but decomitted last fall when the Ducks underwent a coaching change. Before and since, he continued to receive scholarship offers from many of the top schools in the country.
Yankoff, who passed for 27 touchdowns and ran for 26 TDs for the Vikings last fall, said Washington, California, TCU and Nebraska were in his final four of college choices.
“The whole coaching staff was really excited when I called them,” said Yankoff of speaking with Washington coach Chris Petersen on Wednesday. “Coach Pete and I have had some good talks, so I’m excited to be a part of that program.”
At Washington, Yankoff will join former Coeur d’Alene High product Matt James, who will be in his junior season along the offensive line.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be televised nationally Jan. 6 from the Alamodome in San Antonio.
“It’s definitely a big honor,” Yankoff said. “I can’t wait to learn and be a part of the game.”
