Panhandle Health District will host a series of events the first week of April to highlight public health within the community in celebration of National Public Health Week.

Communities across the country will be hosting events that bring attention to some of the nation’s top public health concerns. Panhandle Health District will be highlighting some local public health matters such as physical activity, teen pregnancy and healthy relationships, and children’s and maternal health. All events are free.

“Public Health Week is about bringing people together to improve our community’s health and bringing awareness to local public health issues,” said Melanie Collett, the public information officer for Panhandle Health District.

Tuesday, April 4, will be North Idaho Walking Day. Community members are encouraged to take a 15- to 20-minute walk during the day; either on a lunch break or while having a morning coffee.

Collett said Panhandle Health employees have organized walking groups that go out during a work break or lunch.

“It’s fun and a great way to get to know your coworkers better and enjoy the outdoors,” she said, noting that taking regular walks helps people maintaining a healthy weight, helps prevent chronic disease, and can improve people’s moods.

This year, Panhandle Health is encouraging community members to post a picture on social media using #NIWalkingDay17 to show support for a healthier community.

Later in the week, Thursday, April 6, parents and guardians will have the opportunity to get their own pep talk before having “the talk” with their pre-teen and teenage kids. Experts and local students will be providing tools and strategies for talking with children about healthy relationships and sex.

Parents and anyone who is helping guide a teen or pre-teen through life are welcome, but Panhandle Health does not recommend bringing children.

The North Idaho Bridging the Gap dinner includes a free, three-course dinner at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn at 6 p.m. Thursday. To reserve a seat, community members can sign up online or call (208) 415-5140.

And Mommyfest caps off the week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, at Panhandle Health in Hayden. The event includes booths and resources related to parenting and young children, including car seat safety checks, lactation consultations, nutrition, fitness and more. There is no cost for admission. Panhandle Health is located at 8500 N. Atlas Road.

“There’s really something for everyone,” Collett said. “There are opportunities to come with friends or family, enjoy time together and learn about resources available to you in your community. It’s going to be great.”
