CASA advocates needed for local children

Child Protection Service petitions in Idaho are up 11 percent statewide and 19 percent in North Idaho from 2015 to 2016. The Bonner and Boundary CASA program needs more volunteer advocates to serve these child victims of abuse and neglect.
North Idaho CASA provides court-appointed special advocates (CASAs) for children removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or violence. In 2016, 402 North Idaho children were served by CASA advocates.
CASA advocates investigate the circumstances of a child’s case; prepare reports for the court and make recommendations to the judge for needed medical, dental and mental health care, educational assistance and other services; and monitor case plans, court orders, and hearings for compliance. They ensure the child is in a safe home throughout their case; personally visit with the child; help this child understand their situation and the court proceedings; assist in finding this child a nurturing and permanent home; and help this child to feel worthy and valued by providing a caring and consistent adult presence.
Advocates also provide supplies and comforts, through the CASA Kidz Closet, such as clothing, coats, shoes, diapers, educational supplies, blankets, books and toys, birthday and holiday gifts.
“Oftentimes these children are removed from their homes by the police or Idaho Department of Health and Welfare with just the clothes on their backs. The Advocates step right in providing the child or foster family items they urgently need from diapers to backpacks loaded with school supplies,” explains Lisa Aitken, CASA Board of Director and Account Executive for Hanna Advertising. “Then, they advocate for the child’s best interest for the duration of their court case.”
Currently, Bonner and Boundary counties need more CASA advocates. A new advocate training class will begin in May. Registration is open.
