COEUR d'ALENE — Kootenai County commissioners on Friday afternoon approved a recommendation from the city of Harrison to vacate a home in the city due to the heavy rain in the town on the southern end of Lake Coeur d'Alene.
Commissioner Chris Fillios said the recommendation was approved to ensure occupant safety.
"We were concerned about the state of the property," Fillios said. "These kinds of decisions are tough to make. You have to weigh the risks. We believe that there is sufficient risks."
The name of the homeowner and address were not disclosed.
"Harrison city clerk Mandy Begin contacted Kootenai County to request a county building official to determine whether a property should be vacated given significant movement of the property in the previous seven days and a forecast of additional rain," a press release from the county commissioners' office states.
"In response to the request, county staff reviewed property photos and information provided by a local geotechnical engineer from Allwest Testing and Engineering. An on-site inspection was deemed unnecessary due to the documented deterioration of the site in question."
The county recommendation is non-binding. The city of Harrison will make a final determination regarding the evacuation of the property.
Harrison city officials were unavailable for comment at deadline on Friday night. The city declared a disaster on Thursday night due to the heavy amounts of rain.
