Connor Vanderweyst/Columbia Basin Herald Warden senior J.R. Delgado was Associated Press all-state first team.

J.R. Delgado knew he had to get better.

The regional round of the state tournament wasn't enough for his team and Associated Press all-state honorable mention wasn't enough as an individual.

Delgado put in the work over the summer, leading Warden to its first ever trip to the Class 1A state tournament at the Yakima SunDome this season. The senior wing averaged 24.6 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals per game in addition to being named the South Central Athletic Conference East Player of the Year.

“This recognition really means a lot to me,” Delgado said. “It's been a goal of mine since my sophomore year and now that I've finally accomplished it after an unbelievable season makes it feel even better.”

This is Delgado's second AP all-state selection; he was honorable mention in Class 2B as a junior.

“Last year was just a little taste of this feeling,” he said. “It really motivated me to get better and make the first team. I spent countless hours in the gym and played a bunch of games last summer working on my game all-around. I scored quite a bit this season, which I believe gave me the recognition I feel I deserved.”

Payton Nielsen of Almira/Coulee-Hartline and Ryan Moffet of Odessa-Harrington was first team and honorable mention, respectively in Class 1B.

For the girls, Jamie Loera was all-state honorable mention in Class 4A. It was Loera's first all-state selection after three straight trips and three straight trophies at the state tournament in Tacoma.

“I feel very honored,” she said. “Being able to help my team through a successful year is very special. They are a huge part of making me a better player and teammate.”

Loera moved to full-time point guard this season, leading to an all-around line of 17.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.3 steals per game. More, Loera was the Columbia Basin Big Nine Co-Player of the Year and first team all-defense.

“This definitely sets the bar high on how I want to finish out my high school career,” she said. “After every season I want to get better, and for my senior year, I'm going to do everything I can to get back to the dome and lead my team to another successful year.”

Jamie's big sister Jessie Loera was also AP all-state honorable mention as a junior before making the first team as a senior.

“Jessie had always been a player I've looked up to and to be able share this with her means a lot,” Jamie Loera said. “I'm very grateful to have been able to play with her. She has had a huge impact on the type of player I am today.”
