Hazel Fox, 102
Hazel Fox, 102, passed Sunday, March 26, 2017, peacefully in her sleep at Garden Plaza in Post Falls, Idaho. Hazel was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Busteed, Mont., to Charles and Lillie West.
She married her husband of 63 years, Fred A. Fox, in Spokane, Wash. Fred, Hazel and their two sons, Richard and Lonny, moved to Dalton Gardens in 1950 where Fred and the boys remodeled an old farmhouse on five acres in the small country town of Dalton Gardens.
Hazel had a passion for growing flowers. She was particularly found of Gladiolus and Dahlias, which she planted throughout a one-acre parcel in front of their home. Her flowers were so beautiful that she often gave them to her friends, and had one particular gentleman, Bing Crosby, that would stop to bring a fresh bouquet to his wife. In 1974, when the farm became more than they wanted to manage, Fred and Hazel moved to Coeur d’Alene. Hazel’s passion for flowers went with her and soon their Coeur d’Alene home was alive with flowers.
Hazel’s many interests included camping, fishing (although she didn’t like to eat the fish) and travel. She made many beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hazel enjoyed bowling and was on several bowling leagues throughout her lifetime. She bowled until she was 90 years old and was the oldest on her four-woman team. Hazel was an avid reader; her favorite author was Danielle Steele.
Hazel is survived by her sister, Lorraine Tipke of Hayden; son Lonny (Sherron) Fox of Boise, Idaho; granddaughters Kristi (Mike) Warren of Silverdale, Wash., Kathy (George) Booth of Post Falls, Idaho, Laura (Alan) Garrison of Hayden, Idaho, Shawna Fox of Decatur, Ala., and Tawnya Fox of Portland, Ore.; nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and the extended family of her deceased son, Richard, his wife, Ella and her five children.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2017, at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens, 7315 N. Government Way, Coeur d’Alene, with Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene, in care of the arrangements. You may visit Hazel’s online memorial and leave condolences at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
