Prep roundup: Moses Lake girls track sweeps CBBN meet

YAKIMA — Behind depth and strong relays, Moses Lake girls track and field was able to sweep its Columbia Basin Big Nine dual meet with Davis and Eastmont.

The Chiefs handled the Pirates 90-55 and narrowly edged the Wildcats 75-74.

The Chiefs won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Midori Raymond, Nicole Hellewell, Kamrin Pandher and Obiomahi Abonyi finished the 4x200 in 1:57.33, almost eight seconds faster than second-place Davis. Corina Lybbert, Carlie Gregg, Morgan Yamane and Camille Carpenter also won comfortably in the 4x400.

Elly Johnson tossed 121 feet, seven inches in the discus for first place.

In the boys’ competition, Moses Lake lost to Davis (76-69) and Eastmont (100-43).

The Chiefs did go one, two, three in the 300 hurdles with Jon Ochoa, Santiago Alba and R.J. Koreis. Alba also took first place in the 110 hurdles in 16.45 seconds.

Draven Nevarez won the javelin easily with a mark of 182 feet, one inch.

Ephrata track teams split in Ellensburg

ELLENSBURG — Ephrata boys and girls track and field split its Central Washington Athletic Conference dual meet against Ellensburg and Toppenish.

The Tigers handled the Wildcats in the boys (94-51) and girls (128-22) competition. However, the Bulldogs beat the Tigers 78-5-66.5 in boys and 96-54 in girls.

Anthony Evans finished first in the 400 with a time of 51.03 seconds. Ethan Green (3200) and Brad Flanigan (110 hurdles) also won their respective races.

The Tiger girls dominated the field events with wins in the high jump (Madison Martin), pole vault (Taylin Chamberlin) and triple jump (Katelyn Ostrowski).

Softball

Ephrata 5-8, Wapato 3-3

EPHRATA — Ephrata picked up two crucial wins against Wapato, 5-3 and 8-3.

The Wolves were right behind the Tigers in the CWAC standings. Now Ephrata holds a two-game lead for the No. 5 district seed.

In Game 1, Ephrata broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Paige Davis and Morgan Williams had one RBI each.

Ephrata broke open the late game with five runs in the sixth inning. Becca Helsley had two RBI and Paige Davis was 2-for-4.

Baseball

Soap Lake earns district berth

COULEE DAM — Soap Lake won one of two tiebreaker games to earn the No. 4 district seed.

The Eagles beat Lake Roosevelt 5-3 in six innings to clinch a berth; tiebreaker games were schedule for four innings.

Lex Piedra led with three hits and two RBI. Jackson Gray allowed no earned runs from the mound.

Tonasket won the second tiebreaker 4-3 behind a first-inning grand slam. The Tigers nailed down the No. 3 seed and the Eagles dropped to No. 4.

Toby Hartzell homered in the second game.

Soap Lake will travel to No. 1 seed Tri-Cities Prep on Tuesday for a loser-out game.

Boys soccer

Royal 4, Naches Valley 0

ROYAL CITY — Royal won its district opener 4-0, despite lightning strikes ending the game in the 53rd minute.

The Knights scored three times within the first 20 minutes. Michael Rojas broke the ice with a goal in the seventh minute and Alex Contreras added a pair in the 12th and 16th.

Juan Ojeda added a goal in the second half before the game was called.

Royal will play with winner of Mabton and Wahluke Tuesday.
