SPD throttles up with its new addition

SANDPOINT — Why did the Sandpoint Police Department choose to get a Harley-Davidson, as opposed to another type of motorcycle?
The question posed by Councilwoman Deb Ruehle was answered by SPD Chief Corey Coon — "Because it's cool."
But that's not the sole reason for purchasing a Harley.
"Some of it is the iconic tradition of the Harleys," Coon said. "The other (reason) is there are very few motorcycle companies that do leases; Lone Wolf in Spokane is actually willing to lease us the bike for the three years, so they are one of the few companies that still do that. Plus they sit lower to the ground, easier to ride, easier to maneuver, better for cities — so there's some of those other things that go with it besides just being cool."
Coon said the Harley will be the best fit for Sandpoint. With a steady increase in traffic over the past three years and the downtown streets converting to two-way traffic at any time, Coon asked council members to approve the three-year lease. A motorcycle is more versatile than a patrol car and can respond faster in heavy traffic.
A motorcycle can also respond in crowded areas more easily and can take paths or trails when needed, according to the background description in the lease agreement. It can also be an "important part of the community," the description says, because it can be used to lead funerals, parades and other events.
The lease begins June 1 for a 2017 FLHTP Electra Glide, which is a typical Harley-Davidson model for police and fire personnel. The three-year lease option will allow city officials to reevaluate the program at that time.
The motorcycle lease will cost the city $330 per month.
Mike Hutter, former police chief for Ponderay who now works with SPD, will be assigned to ride the motorcycle. He has previous riding experience, Coon said, and will also attend a training course certified through the state of Idaho.
"Will the mayor be able to ride this Harley?" asked Mayor Shelby Rognstad, to which Coon said no.
The small crowd in attendance at Wednesday's City Council meeting laughed as Rognstad said he would "like to entertain a motion anyway," to approve the lease agreement, to which council voted unanimously in favor.
