PINEHURST — It was a beautiful day for golf on Monday when the Kellogg Wildcats hosted and won the Intermountain League district championship at Pinehurst Golf Course.

All season long head coach Simon Miller has said that the regular season champion Wildcats would be even more dangerous if they ever got a chance to play on their home course with some favorable weather.

They finally got it.

The Kellogg boys played a fantastic round and shot a 299 team score to lock up the district championship.

Cade Finlay was scintillating for the Wildcats as he shot an incredible score of 68 including a stellar 4 under par (32) during his first nine holes.

He was followed up by Chase Jerome who shot a 75.

The 299 score was the best team score Miller has seen in his time with the Kellogg Golf Program.

On the girls side, Kat Rauenhorst paced the Wildcats with a solid 89 and was followed closely by Morgan Nusz who shot a 93 as Kellogg finished with a score 389.

The girls will have a chance to defend their state championship next week, while the boys are looking to climb to the top of the mountain after a third place finish last year.

“I hate to complain about shooting a 299, but I know we had some guys who are normally about eight strokes better than they were today,” Miller said.

“Our girls actually shot a point better today than one of their state scores last year and I’m really impressed with Morgan who has improved despite some ups and downs this season. I like where we are at and I don’t think we have peaked yet.”

The 3A State Golf Tournament will be next Monday in Idaho Falls at the Idaho Falls Country Club.
