May 18, 1967 — CUBS CLEAN BEACH

A tip of the hat goes to dens three and four of Cub Scout pack 110 and den mothers Mrs. Les Brown and Mrs. Ted Henderson, according to Mayor Floyd Gray and Parks and Recreation Superintendent Bob Linsday. The boys went to the city beach and conducted their own cleanup campaign, removing litter and broken glass from the beach and adjoining area.

On another date, the Girl Scouts cleaned up Farmin park and outlying city recreation areas.

SHS GRADUATES 60TH CLASS MONDAY

Sandpoint Senior High’s 60th commencement will be Monday, May 22 at 8 p.m. in the Senior High gym. The SHS orchestra, directed by Mrs. Marian Ruyle, will play “Tannhauser March” as the processional. Rev. Donald Taylor, pastor of First Lutheran Church, will give the invocation.

Miss Susan Hedlund is valedictorian, Bruce Johnson salutatorian, John Snedden serves as senior class president, Gary Peterson as vice president and Lynne Sletager as secretary.

This year’s graduating class of 173 will bring the total of SHS graduates to 4832. The largest class ever to graduate was the class of 1965 which had 194 members. The smallest was the first, the class of 1908, with one member.

May 18, 1917 — LAKE RISING RAPIDLY

The water level of the lake registered 15.67 feet on the government board at the City dock this morning, a rise of over eight inches in 24 hours and nearly five feet for the past week. The total raise this spring has been 10 feet, nine inches.

CLARKSFORK LOG DRIVE ADRIFT

The Clarksfork log drive of perhaps 20 million feet was turned loose into the lake Saturday to save the works from destruction by washout. This season, because of continued cool weather the lake did not fill as usual, in fact its level is five feet lower than a year ago at this time. Last week’s several days of warm weather melted mountain snows and sent the waters rushing down the Clarksfork and into the lake in a terrific unchecked torrent threatening to sweep the big log drive through the sorting works. This danger caused the log owners to release the drive into the lake. That whole end of the lake is covered with logs, and all available boats have been employed since Saturday in sacking them.

TWO AUTOMOBILES TAKEN AT FERRY

Sheriff Remer has two Hudson super-sixes in his yard which will probably be sold to the highest bidder after a haul at the Clarksfork ferry shortly before midnight Wednesday when Constable Dougherty, lying in wait for some Montana horsestealers, took the automobiles and four men into custody for transporting forty cases of Sunnybrook whiskey.
