DUI suspect pleading to lesser charge

SANDPOINT — A Post Falls man who seriously injured another man in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 95 is pleading guilty to a reduced charge, 1st District Court records show.
Attorneys in Corey Michael Cook’s felony driving under the influence case advised the court on Friday that he is pleading guilty to a misdemeanor DUI offense. A change-of-plea hearing is pending in district court.
Cook was scheduled to be tried next month.
Idaho State Police said Cook was southbound on U.S. 95 when he crossed into the northbound lane of travel and crashed into an oncoming pickup truck in Colburn on May 7, 2016. The other driver of the pickup was entrapped in the wreckage and had to be flown to Kootenai Health in an air ambulance once he was freed, according to an ISP probable cause affidavit.
Cook told state police he was at a loss to explain the cause of the collision, court records indicate.
Cook, 19, told state police he was the designated driver at a mud bog event in Moyie Springs, but had no passengers in his vehicle. The rig also held more than a dozen of unopened or punctured beer cans, in addition to a bottle of Canadian whiskey.
Cook’s breath alcohol concentration was measured at 0.13, which is nearly twice the legal limit to drive of 0.08, according to court documents.
Cook was further charged with underage possession of alcohol, a misdemeanor.
A state trooper noted that there were no pre-collision skid marks left by Cook’s rig, while the northbound Ford Ranger left skid marks which indicated hard braking and an attempt at an evasive maneuver, court documents indicate.
