May 21, 1967 — PIANO RECITAL FRIDAY

Piano pupils of Ruth Adams give their annual recital Friday at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church.

Pupils are Johanna Munson, Renee Savage, Barbara Greenleaf, Janine Sisson, Debbie Twigg, Susan Dreier, Kirsten Thompson, Linda Murray, Mary Evans, John Evans, Douglas Madsen, Patty Moran, Ely Lou Munson, Lynn Fitzpatrick, Beth Thompson, Carleen Hamann, Mardi Bauer, Cathy Rosholt and Mike Gunter.

GARY L. PIETSCH HEADS USO DRIVE

Gary L. Pietsch has been appointed by Mayor Floyd Gray to serve as chairman of a June finance drive for the United Service Organization (USO); Gray will serve as honorary chairman.

USO units are found near military installations throughout the nation and overseas. They serve as a home away from home for U.S. servicemen.

ROLFSON, DOCKINS TO HUNT MOOSE

Allen Rolfson was chosen by Bonner County Sportsmen’s Assn. to represent the organization on the first annual moose hunt next Nov. 5-11 in British Columbia. He picked Pete Dockins as his partner for the hunt. Half of the moose meat from the animal Rolfson is expected to shoot will be turned over to the association for a future moose feed to which the public will be invited.

Pend d’Oreille Review

May 21, 1917 — CITY DADS DEPUTIZED

Forming a vice squad last night, the mayor and six council members, led by Police Chief Young and Night Policeman DeMer and assisted by Deputy Sheriff Spoor, raided the G&B soft drink place on First, and the Pend d’Oreille hotel.

The council’s finance committee was in session at city hall when Chief Young appeared, reporting drunken men on the street. When asked why he didn’t go after those selling the booze, the chief said, “That is a pretty big contract to do alone.”

“Well, deputize some citizens and go do it.”

“All right, I deputize the council right here and now,” said the Chief. The upshot was that council members joined the officers and started out.

At the soft drink place, a thorough search resulted in finding a bottle of whiskey on a rear railing. At the Pend d’Oreille hotel, Alderman Ellison discovered bottles being thrown into the creek from back windows. He got a boat and found empty bottles on the water but with the corks pulled, the evidence mixed with the waters of Sand creek. A search of the premises netted a thermos bottle of whiskey in one of the rooms.

Managers of both businesses were arrested.

FIRST RED CROSS SHIPMENT READY

After six weeks of diligent needle work, the Red Cross ladies have readied the first box of hospital supplies for shipment. The shipment of bed sheets, pillow cases, towels and wash cloths, valued at $170, will go to Brooklyn.
