A cyclist from St. Ignatius has died of his injuries after being hit by a vehicle Sunday morning at the intersection of Chalwain Road and St. Mary’s Lake Road.

The man has been identified as 73-year-old Nick J. Herak.

According to Lake County Sheriff Don Bell, the incident was classified as a hit-and-run after Douglas Calvin Charlo, 47, allegedly struck Herak with his vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Bell said Charlo was been arrested by the Montana Highway Patrol and charged with negligent vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Herak’s body has been taken to the Montana Crime Lab for an autopsy.
