Destination: Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — As of Thursday afternoon, slightly more than 1,300 had signed up for the 40th Coeur d’Alene Marathon, scheduled for Sunday morning with a start and finish in McEuen Park.
Of those, around 220 have registered for the marathon, nearly 800 for the half-marathon, and around 275 for the 5k run/walk.
“More than half of our people are from outside of Idaho,” said Cynthia Rozyla, in her third year as race director. “We’re starting to become a destination race.”
This year’s destination begins at 5:30 a.m. with the marathon walk, followed by the full marathon start at 6:30, the half-marathon start at 7 and the 5k start at 7:30.
From the start/finish in front of the Avista Pavilion in McEuen Park, the marathon and half-marathon courses wind through downtown Coeur d’Alene, before heading east on the Centennial Trail to the turnaround near Higgens Point.
The marathon consists of two loops, the half-marathon one.
For the second year, the 5k course heads west, along the Dike Road and through the North Idaho College campus and back. That helps remove some of the congestion on the marathon/half-marathon course, as the race again is a qualifier for the 2018 Boston Marathon.
Last year’s Cd’A Marathon winner, Nathan Birdsall of Coeur d’Alene, is entered this year, Rozyla said. Last year’s women’s marathon winner, Katarina Mueller of Vancouver, Wash., was not entered as of Thursday afternoon.
Race registration will also be accepted Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Plaza Shops. Rozyla said she expects at least another couple hundred to sign up on that day.
Volunteers — in particular, pointers — are still needed. Those interested are asked to show up Sunday at 6 a.m. at the start/finish area, Rozyla said.
This year for the first time, some 48 kids in elementary and middle schools are signed up for the 5k to Marathon program, in which kids run or walk during the spring, log their miles, then run/walk the final 3.1 miles on Sunday to complete the marathon distance.
“It’s to get these kids out, get them active, teach them some healthy lifestyles,” Rozyla said. “We’ve received interest from other marathons who want to know more about this program.”
As it is the 40th anniversary of the race, Rozyla is asking runners to bring any old pictures, T-shirts or stories from the race, as race organizers are putting together a timeline of sorts for the race website.
The race is a fundraiser for the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation.
The cutoff date has already passed for registrants also wanting to secure a race T-shirt following the race. However, Rozyla said another order will be taken at the race for those who signed up late and want a race T-shirt.
