SANDPOINT — It's spring cleanup time for the cities of Sandpoint and Ponderay.

The Sandpoint city-wide cleanup is scheduled for the week of June 5-9. City crews will assist non-commercial Sandpoint residents by hauling away appliances, furniture, household items and more upon phone request only.

In Sandpoint, no electronic or hazardous items will be picked up, including TVs, computer monitors, batteries, paint or tires. Construction materials are not eligible and since branch and leaf pickup was recently completed, it will not be eligible either during the cleanup.

To schedule a pick up, call Dyan at the city shop before June 4 between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 208-263-3428.

Also, Items must be separated into appliances, metal and household and placed at the curb or next to the street with your assigned number by June 4.

In Ponderay, the city is hosting its first city-wide cleanup over the weekend of June 10-11. The event will be followed by a barbecue at Jesse's Park, next to Northside Fire, where residents can get to know their neighbors and community members, as well as Mayor Steve Geiger and other city staff. Also, residents will get an opportunity to learn about upcoming projects in the Ponderay community.

Community members, businesses and local groups have already offered to help out with the cleanup by providing multiple services over the weekend.

Those services include, but are not limited to:

- Lawn care — Mowing, weeding, raking, tree limb removal, garbage and yard waste cleanup and removal.

- Minor repairs, such as fixing a broken step, replace a fence plank, secure loose boards and more. These will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

- Recycling — removal of appliances, scrap metal, qualifying cars, paper products and more.

- Solid waste — Dumpsters will be provided for general garbage. Additional locations will be provided for the collection of tires, appliances, electronics, wood products, batteries, paint and chemicals.

- Pressure washing for driveways, buildings and decks.

- Ditch and culvert cleanup

- Painting services — Primarily minor projects such as fences, hand railings, etc.

- Planting and garden cleanup.

To register for assistance in any of the listed services, or to volunteer, contact the city at 208-265-5468. Information and registration forms are also available on the city's website at cityofponderay.org.

The cleanup will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the barbecue to follow.

The following weekend, June 17 and 18, is Ponderay Yard Sale Weekend, in which city officials will be encouraging community members to host yard sales around town.

"We thought this would be a good follow-up to the cleanup weekend as people might discover items that they'd like to re-home during the cleanup event," said KayLeigh Miller, assistant planner.
