The Flathead Rapids U12 girls soccer team gave it their all at a tournament in Helena earlier this month and earned first place.

The Rapids took down Helena Arsenal 1-0 but fell to the Missoula Strikers 2-0 on May 20 for the first day of the tournament. On May 21, the Rapids dominated the Livingston Raiders 4-1) before tying with Ravalli 0-0.

Olivia Genovese scored three of the four goals against Livingston, assisted by Finley McCarthy, and the remaining goal was scored by McCarthy and in turn assisted by Genovese.

For the championship, the Rapids got another shot at Missoula, beating them 2-1. McCarthy scored on a penalty kick in the first half.

“So incredibly proud of the girls this weekend,” head coach Patty Hughes said. “Talk about determination and grit. They played with class, physical and mental toughness, and pure love of the game and their teammates. I told them winning this tournament wouldn't be easy but it was possible.”

The Rapids will continue their season on June 10 against Polson and Helena Arsenal in Polson.
