BONNERS FERRY — The second graders of Mrs. Tawny Macdonald’s class at Naples Elementary School had their eyes light up when they were awarded an ice cream party for completing their homework for National Fire Prevention week.

The students greeted the Chief of South Boundary Fire Department, Tony Rohrwasser, fondly as “Fireman Tony” when he walked into the classroom, arms laden with ice cream, different syrups, and sprinkles for the kids.

Rohrwasser had visited the class earlier and gave them the homework of mapping an escape route from their bedroom to at least two exits in their homes leading to a safe meeting place, and then practicing the route with their families in case of a fire. With the majority of the class completing the task, and the other kids promising to complete the homework, the class was awarded with the ice cream party.

Not only were the kids mapping their escape routes, they also memorized their addresses. The object of the weeks lesson was to educate kids about the importance of fire prevention, and having a safe escape plan in case of a fire.
