Vikings look to weather Madison
Mark Nelke Sports Editor | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 years, 2 months AGO
Snow is forecast for Friday, when Coeur d’Alene plays host to Madison of Rexburg in the quarterfinals of the state 5A football playoffs.
Much has changed since the last time it snowed in Coeur d’Alene for a playoff game.
In 2009, at least a couple inches fell the day of the Vikings’ home semifinal vs. Eagle. Coeur d’Alene was just beginning its ascent to the top of the 5A hierarcy, and Eagle escaped with a victory, helped by a still-bizarre play where the snap slid past the quarterback, was picked up by the running back and carried for a big gain.
These days, the Vikings are a perennial playoff team, but looking to make it back to the title game for the first time since 2013. Coeur d’Alene has seen its season end in the quarterfinals each of the last three years, including 2015 when the Viks were upset at home by Madison.
This year’s Bobcats are led by quarterback Jordan Porter, who has passed for 1,897 yards and 23 touchdowns with six interceptions. He’s also known to keep plays alive with his scrambling ability.
Blake Moseley and Karson Hasting are the top rushers. Moseley, who missed half the season with an ankle injury has two kick returns for touchdowns. Tight end Joe Dougherty has 59 catches, seven for touchdowns.
As for the picks, both Jason and I took a beating, much like many of the relievers in this year’s World Series.
I went 4-4 overall, Jason 3-5. Overall, I am 66-29, Jason 61-34.
HIGH SCHOOL
State 5A quarterfinals
Madison (7-3) at Coeur d’Alene (7-2)
Friday, 7 p.m.
NELKE: The only thing that might stop Coeur d’Alene is the field, in the event of bad weather. And even that might not stop the Vikings.
Coeur d’Alene, 48-13
ELLIOTT: Even if the weather is bad, Coeur d’Alene’s speed is too much for Madison.
Coeur d’Alene, 38-20.
State 2A quarterfinals
West Side (7-2) vs. St. Maries (5-4)
Friday, 4 p.m. at Kibbie Dome, Moscow
NELKE: I’m afraid to look it up, but it seems like when I pick St. Maries to lose, it wins, and when I pick the Lumberjacks to win ... well, you know. So take this as a compliment down by the St. Joe ...
West Side, 28-24
ELLIOTT: The Lumberjacks picked up a huge road win last week to open the playoffs. Something tells me it’s a close game on Friday ...
St. Maries, 26-24
COLLEGE
Idaho (3-5) at Troy (6-2)
Tonight, 6:15 p.m.
NELKE: Unless there’s a Sun Belt employee standing next to them with a gun to their heads, what do you think the ESPNU announcers are going to talk about tonight? Maybe Idaho in its last year before getting booted out of the conference? At least when they’re not reminding us that Troy won at LSU. The Vandals have little margin for error if they hope to return to a bowl game, but are big-time underdogs here. Be that as it may ...
Idaho, 31-24
ELLIOTT: Idaho has the chance to play spoiler tonight.
Troy, 38-24
Stanford (6-2) at Washington State (7-2)
Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
NELKE: Hopefully WSU is done licking its wounds after getting gashed at Arizona last week. Stanford held out running back and Heisman hopeful Bryce Love last week at Oregon State, and was lucky to escape with a win. The Cardinal will try to control the game on the ground, keeping the Coug offense off the field as much as it can. Of course, it might also be winter in Pullman on Saturday.
WSU, 27-17
ELLIOTT: What was the deal with the Cougs benching their quarterback last week? And with Stanford escaping at Oregon State?
Stanford, 17-16
Nevada (1-7) at Boise State (6-2)
Saturday, 4 p.m.
NELKE: Even though he’s unemployed right now, Colin Kaepernick ain’t walking through that door for the Wolf Pack.
BSU, 42-7
ELLIOTT: Boise State is back folks ... or at least this week they are.
BSU, 38-10
Weber State (6-2) at Eastern Washington (5-3)
Saturday, 1 p.m.
NELKE: Weber State is a tough foe, and the Eags had an extra week to think about its loss at Southern Utah, which ended a five-game winning streak.
EWU, 31-27
ELLIOTT: Eastern finds a way to get it done.
EWU, 34-20
