New microscope to help medical center staff and patients

The Laboratory Department at Cabinet Peaks Medical Center recently purchased a microscope that will help medical technologists to recognize normal and abnormal cells in patient specimens, a news release states.
Equipped with “advanced optics, photographic capabilities and an external viewing monitor,” the microscope is also expected to improve patient care.
“In the past, turnaround time for the diagnosis for blood disorders such as leukemia, anemia, and other dysplastic diseases took about 24 to 48 hours for verified results from the pathologist to get back to our lab,” Lab Manager Roger Riddle states in the news release. “With this new piece of equipment, we will be able to obtain a final result in less than an hour.
The microscope will also “provide a real-time link to clinical pathologists” and help train visiting college students, Riddle said.
