MOSCOW — St. Maries had its chances in a state 2A quarterfinal game against West Side at the Kibbie Dome on Friday night.

Unfortunately, the extra ones it gave back to West Side wound up costing the Lumberjacks.

St. Maries, the defending 2A champion, had five turnovers in a 21-6 loss to West Side, ending its run for a repeat title.

Three of the ’Jacks’ five turnovers came in the second half.

“We felt like we left some chances out there,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “We were in a good spot in the first half, but needed to finish some drives. We stubbed our toe a bit in the second half, and it was the tell-tale of the game.”

St. Maries took advantage of a West Side fumble recovered by Tyler Lohman, opening the scoring on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Kaden Hammond to Lohman to take a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.

“Tyler had a great game and worked the same on offense and defense,” Tefft said. “All of the kids played hard, but we just didn’t make enough plays.”

Lohman also intercepted two passes for St. Maries, which finishes 5-5.

West Side (8-2) advances to face the Grangeville/Declo winner next weekend.

“Give them credit, they were prepared for us and everything we tried to do,” Tefft said. “It was the self inflicted things that cost us tonight. We knew it was going to be a big part of the game, and it was the reason they won.”
