Vets get a little payback

Several local businesses and nonprofits are offering free meals and services to veterans in appreciation of their service. Saturday is Veterans Day.
TODAY
- The Coeur d'Alene Casino, 37914 S. Nukwalqw, Worley, is offering a free dinner for veterans at 5 p.m. in the event center. Doors open at 4 p.m.
FRIDAY
- Free dental services will be offered to homeless veterans or those in need at Generations Dental, 1223 N. Government Way, 208-664-9225, and Orban Family Dental, 2834 Ramsey Road, Suite 102, 208-667-1546, in Coeur d'Alene. Call for an appointment. Military identification is required.
- North Idaho Bed and Breakfast Association members will offer veterans' families a free night. Log Spirit B&B in Athol, 208-683-4722; Western Pleasure Guest Ranch in Sandpoint, 208-263-9066, Roosevelt Inn B&B, Coeur d'Alene, 208-765-5200; and Aspen Meadows B&B, Coeur d’Alene, 208-775-4305 are participating. - Real Life Ministries, 1860 Cecil Ave., Post Falls, will host a free meal for veterans at 6 p.m.
SATURDAY
- The Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d'Alene, is offering a free movie, "Sergeant York," with coffee and doughnuts afterward. Event lasts from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
- Sweet Lou’s restaurant, 601 N. Front St., Coeur d'Alene, will salute troops by offering all current and former members of the military a free, hand-cut, 6-ounce steak with one side from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
"It’s great watching service men and women coming in proudly in their uniforms and exchanging their stories," said Chad Foust, owner of Sweet Lou’s. "It’s even better when other customers greet them and thank them for their service."
Military ID is required. The offer is good for dine-in only.
- Texas Roadhouse, 402 W. Neider Ave., Coeur d'Alene, invites veterans and active military members to a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of service such as a military or Veterans Administration card or discharge papers is required.
- Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d'Alene, will hold a veterans' service at 5 p.m., followed by a free meal and entertainment at 6 p.m.
- The Gyro Shack, 212 Ironwood Drive, will give away a free original gyro to any active duty military member or veteran with proof of service from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Applebee's in Coeur d'Alene will be giving veterans and active-duty military a free meal. Bring proof of service.
- First Baptist Church, 424 E. Wallace Ave., Coeur d'Alene, will serve free all-you-can-eat pancakes at 7 a.m.
- The Locker Room men's salons in Coeur d'Alene will offer free haircuts to veterans and active-duty military members from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- The Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Warrior Society will hold a free ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes trailhead in Plummer. The ceremony will conclude with a free lunch at the Worley Longhouse.
SUNDAY
- A free Veterans Recognition Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at Lakeland High in Rathdrum. There will be refreshments, entertainment, door prizes and special prizes.
SATURDAY, Nov. 18
- Golden City Loan and Pawn, 4025 N. Government Way, Suite 2, Coeur d'Alene, will give out 100 free turkeys while supplies last to veterans and local families in need from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. G.I. Java will have free coffee.
