Prep girls basketball
season starts Saturday
Lake City travels to Sandpoint on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the first high school girls basketball game of the season involving local teams.
On Tuesday, Timberlake visits Lakeland, St. Maries travels to Potlatch, and Lakeside faces North Idaho Christian at Holy Family Catholic School.
Post Falls opens on Saturday, Nov. 18, at home vs. Sandpoint.
Genesis Prep opens Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Kellogg.
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, Coeur d’Alene opens at home vs. Genesis Prep, and Kootenai is home vs. Troy.
Brief previews of area girls basketball teams are scheduled to be published next week. Teams will be covered further in the upcoming Press winter sports special section.
Ex-WSU football standout Sorensen to speak
to NIC Booster Club
COEUR d’ALENE — Paul Sorensen, former Washington State football All-American, will be the guest speaker at the NIC Booster Club Luncheon at noon Tuesday at the Outback Steakhouse.
Sorensen played football for WSU from 1980 to ’82 after transferring from Diablo Valley College in California. He was part of WSU’s 1981 Holiday Bowl team — the Cougars’ first bowl since 1931 — and he earned football and National Education Association All-America first-team honors. Sorensen was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 1982 NFL draft.
After his retirement from the NFL and a stint in the USFL, Sorensen served as the color analyst for Cougar football eadio broadcasts for 14 years. Since then, he has been part of the Eastern Washington University football broadcast team. This year, he was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
As someone who played at a two-year college, Sorensen can attest to the role that junior college athletics can play for young student-athletes to maximize their development for success.

Hatley earns PNGA
Player of the Year honor
Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake was named Men’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year for the third consecutive year by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
Among Hatley’s highlights was making it to the Round of 16 in the PNGA Men’s Amateur, playing against college players. He was the medalist for the U.S. Amateur qualifier, and had top-5 finishes in the Oregon Open Invitational, Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur, Washington State Men’s Mid-Amateur and the Royal Oaks Invitational.
Earlier, Hatley was honored as Men’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year by the Washington State Golf Association.
NIC soccer players tabbed
for NWAC all-star matches
North Idaho College midfielder Cade Roske and defender Irvin Angulo, both sophomores, were named to the Northwest Athletic Conference men’s South/East Region team for Sunday’s men’s all-star soccer match at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
Freshman forward Linnea Pretzer, sophomore midfielder Chelsea Love and freshman defender Ashley Camacho of NIC were selected to play in the women’s all-star match.
The women’s match is at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men’s at 11:15.

Area bowling association to
hold fall meeting Wednesday
The Coeur d’Alene USBC WBA will be hold its fall association meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at Triple Play Inn and Suites in Hayden.
The meeting is open to all Coeur d’Alene WBA members. Association awards will be presented, along with city tournament awards.
