SANDPOINT — Mediation may be used to resolve a series of criminal charges against a Bonner County man accused of opening fire on a deputy during a high-speed pursuit last year.

Steven Michael Gervasi is charged in Idaho with burglarizing the home of a relative and opening fire on a woman’s vehicle after setting fire to a Spirit Valley residence. The alleged crime spree culminated several days later with Gervasi opening fire on Bonner County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Hughes after he pursued Gervasi into Pend Oreille County, Wash. Hughes narrowly missed being struck by the incoming rounds, according to court documents.

Gervasi, 26, managed to elude Hughes during the May 2016 pursuit, but was later apprehended without further incident during a traffic stop.

Gervasi is charged with second-degree attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Washington state. The charges against him in Idaho include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of burglary, two counts of grand theft, robbery, arson and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gervasi is accused of stealing an all-terrain vehicle and a Beretta semiautomatic pistol from a relative in Cocolalla. He allegedly robbed a woman of her mobile phone and firing on her vehicle as she sped away from the scene of the arson on Curtis Creek Road.

Gervasi is being held in Pend Oreille County Jail, although authorities on both sides of the state line have agreed to allow Gervasi to return to Idaho so he can take part in mediation, court records show.

Gervasi’s defense counsel, Spokane attorney Doug Phelps, advised 1st District judge on Friday that his client may face federal charges, but said mediation could be utilized to reach “global” resolution of all the criminal charges against Gervasi.
