COEUR d'ALENE — There were so many break-ins that Christian D. Saganski couldn’t remember them all, although he allegedly recounted details of some of the burglaries to police and located others on a map.
Saganski, 29, of Hayden was arrested Saturday and charged in First District Court with one count of burglary, but Detective Jared Reneau of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department said more charges are pending.
Maybe a lot more.
Saganski is accused of break-ins at six homes in Coeur d’Alene, and he may be tied to burglaries in Hayden, police said.
Detectives over the weekend obtained an arrest warrant for Saganski after he was allegedly captured on a video surveillance system leaving a residence on West Pescador Drive in The Landings subdivision, where he used to live, carrying items he allegedly stole from the home.
He was arrested near his parents’ Hayden home after getting in a car reportedly associated with the burglaries.
During a police interview Saganski reportedly admitted to six break-ins.
“(He) admitted to burglaries in Hawks Nest, The Landings, and Coeur d’Alene Place subdivisions,” Reneau said. “He also admitted to several burglaries in Hayden.”
Saganski was booked into the Kootenai County Jail on six charges of felony burglary and Magistrate Pat McFadden on Monday set bond at $500,000 — the amount on the warrant. Bond for two additional charges of drug and paraphernalia possession was set at $10,000.
Saganski is accused of stealing mostly cash from residences he entered by breaking in the back door, and usually leaving through the front door. The burglaries occurred in the early hours and after dark at three homes on Pescador, as well as homes on La Rochelle, West Freeland and West Dumont drives.
In one case, police report, a neighbor saw him entering a house, retrieved a firearm and confronted Saganski, who ran away on foot without looking back. In another case a couple had left for work around 5 a.m. when their children thought they heard someone in the house. One of the children saw Saganski leaving her parents’ bedroom, police reports indicate.
Saganski, who told police he is a heroin addict, is accused of a stealing several hundred dollars in the break-ins that occurred earlier this month. After stealing a jar full of change he was observed on a Walmart surveillance camera at the coin machine, turning the coins into bills, police said.
According to police reports, Saganski left footprints on doors he allegedly kicked in during the break-ins, as well as on patios and inside floors.
Reneau said he expects the original charge to be amended this week to include the additional felonies.
If he fails to post bond, Saganski’s preliminary hearing will be within 14 days in the magistrate court.
