Timberlake runs past Lakeland in opener

RATHDRUM — With some balance, the two-time defending state 3A champion Timberlake Tigers opened the season the same way as they’ve finished the previous two years.
With a win.
Junior McKeeley Tonkin scored 15 points and freshman Brooke Jessen added 12 points for the Tigers in a 64-23 win over the Lakeland Hawks in the season opener for both schools at Hawk Court on Tuesday.
“Timberlake shared and shot the ball really well tonight,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said.
Timberlake hosts Lapwai on Saturday.
Lauryn Cooper scored eight points for Lakeland, which hosts St. Maries next Tuesday.

POTLATCH — The Lumberjacks started a little slow, but you couldn’t tell by the final score.
Kaylee Auer had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lumberjacks, who missed their first six shots before getting rolling in a nonleague win over the Loggers.
“We had a press on in the first quarter and started out a little slow,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “The girls came together and converted off some steals. The girls came out and played with a lot of intensity and heart tonight.”
Kaci Haeg had 12 points and four steals, Alena Davenport seven points, seven steals and four assists for St. Maries (1-0), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Tommia Pakootas scored 13 points to lead the Knights past the Royals in the nonleague opener for both schools at Holy Family Catholic School.
Mary Schlader had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots, Savannah Seeley 12 points and Grace Gwin had nine rebounds for North Idaho Christian, which faces Priest River on Thursday at Holy Family.
Lakeside will face Wallace in the opening round of the Silver Valley Tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Andrews Gymnasium in Kellogg.
