Discover the holidays with the Coeur d'Alene Symphony

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Symphony will present its “Holiday Discoveries” concerts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene.

As part of its year-long conductor search — Voyage of Discovery — the Symphony is proud to present its second candidate Dr. Barry Araújo Kolman conducting Bloch’s “Schelomo,” “Poet and Peasant Overture” by von Súppe, “Carnival Overture” by Dvorak and many favorite holiday selections. Principal cellist Mika Hood will be the soloist for the Bloch.

Kolman received his doctorate in conducting from the University of Northern Colorado, where he was awarded the Graduate Dean's Citation for Excellence and a Colorado Graduate Fellowship. His Master of Music degree in clarinet performance is from Illinois State University and his bachelor's degree in music education is from the Crane School of Music.

Kolman was the music director and conductor of the Shenandoah Symphony Orchestra for 25 years. He has written several books in English and Spanish and guest conducts all over the world. He resides in New York City, where he has an active woodwinds studio, is a music theory tutor and continues to guest conduct. He also performs in the New York metropolitan area.

Hood is an avid chamber musician and performer. She can be heard performing in various ensembles in the Inland Northwest region including the Spokane Symphony as a substitute. She received a master’s in cello performance from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Hood teaches in Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 and older and $10 for youth and students with ID. Family rates are available.
