Down to the college teams now
Mark Nelke Sports Editor | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 years AGO
OK, so we both thought Coeur d’Alene was going to win, and Idaho was going to win.
The Vikings’ state 5A title game loss to Highland last Friday in Pocatello closed the book on the high school season.
For the year, yours truly (the weary traveler still catching up on his sleep after driving to Pokey and back last weekend) went 46-21 on high school picks. Jason Elliott (with two Ts) finished 42-25.
Overall, I am 76-33 for the season, Jason 70-39.
We’ll stay with picking the area college teams, as long as they’re still playing. All are with the exception of Eastern Washington, which probably still should be, except for last week’s snub by the FCS playoff selection committee. The Eags have a point as to why they should be in and others should not, but sometimes that happens when you don’t qualify automatically, and leave the decision up to the whim of humans.
COLLEGE
Idaho (3-7) at New Mexico State (4-6)
Saturday, 1 p.m.
NELKE: Welcome to the Booted Out Of The Sun Belt Bowl. The Aggies’ motivation is, they would be bowl eligible with wins in their last two games. The Vandals just hope they can get a few more reps this week or next for quarterback Matt Linehan and his injured thumb, so he can continue to ascend the Idaho record book.
New Mexico State, 22-16
ELLIOTT: Idaho should have won last week at home against Coastal Carolina, but didn’t. The Vandals should win this week at New Mexico State, but won’t.
New Mexico State, 24-14
Washington State (9-2) at Washington (9-2)
Saturday, 5 p.m.
NELKE: The Cougs can play in the Pac-12 championship game against USC with a victory over the Huskies. U-Dub, with no chance of making it to the conference title game, and no chance of course of returning to the College Football Playoff, is in the rare role of spoiler. This is a game where WSU needs to put all its excuses aside and just win the darn thing.
WSU, 38-35
ELLIOTT: Anyone remember the Apple Cup a few years ago when both teams were winless heading into the game? Those days are long gone. As far as Saturday’s game ...
Washington, 38-35
Boise State (9-2) at Fresno State (8-3)
Saturday, 12:30 p.m.
NELKE: Even though this is essentially a dress rehearsal for next week, Boise State will treat it as a chance to send a little message for the Bulldogs to think about on their flight up to Boise.
Boise State, 31-17
ELLIOTT: These two teams will meet again next week in the Mountain West championship game. Boise State is the better team, right?
Fresno State, 27-24
