Manweller elected chair of SCPP

OLYMPIA — Rep. Matt Manweller, R-Ellensburg, has been elected chair of the Select Committee on Pension Policy (SCPP).
The SCPP analyses issues and policies affecting the state’s public employee retirement systems and can propose changes and amendments to state law to the Legislature.
“As a member of the House Appropriations Committee I am fully aware of the importance pensions play in our budget process and future financial obligations,” Manweller said in a press release issued by Senior PIO Kurt Hammond. “I am elated I have been chosen to chair this committee. I have been a member of the committee since I was elected to the Legislature. We have an essential responsibility to ensure our pension systems are continually financially stable and secure and make any necessary recommendations to the Legislature to protect and keep our pension system strong.”
Manweller has been actively involved in pension issues. Last year, he was the prime-sponsor of House Bill 2202, which fixed a discrepancy in the Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters (LEOFF) pension system regarding eligibility of EMTs.
He has been a member of SCPP since 2013 and chaired his first meeting Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The SCPP committee has 20 members; four appointed by the president of the Senate, four appointed by the Speaker of the House, and four active, two retired and as four employer representatives appointed by the governor.
The next scheduled SCPP meeting is Oct. 17.

FFA judging teams among the best at Central Washington State Fair
YAKIMA — The Othello High School FFA judging team brought home several top honors from the Central Washington State Fair held in Yakima Sept. 26. Among them were a first place banner in Class 6 Livestock, and a second place finish by Alyson Shade who beat out all but one of 300 competitors from 61 high schools in the individual dairy judging. Sarah Wilson placed eighth in horse judging.
New York Times and Stanford University cite Othello at the top
The Othello School District is in the nation’s 100th percentile for student academic growth between 3rd and 8th grade according to an article published in The New York Times last week.
Annual Jog-a-Thon raises money for a good cause
The Othello PTA held its annual Jog-a-Thon fundraiser at Lutacaga Elementary Friday, Oct. 13. Kindergarten through fifth grade students were scheduled to run laps outside of the school, but the event was moved into the gymnasium because the weather on Thursday left too much moisture on the grass for the kids to run through.
