SANDPOINT — The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomed Bonner County Bicycles to the chamber with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 20.
Bonner County Bicycles is primarily a used bicycle shop, though they also offer new bikes.
“We provide good, guaranteed, rebuilt bikes for a fraction of the cost of a new one. They may show signs of use but they are still worthy of love,” said Dan Shook, one of the owners.
The shop is a Kona dealer and can also provide Dahon, Cogburn, All City, We The People, Surly and Sun bikes, among other brands. They also offer high quality and fairly priced repairs, new and used parts, and are well known locally for their free bike rack.
“Our prices are always reasonable, we’re only grumpy occasionally, and we have opinions on just about everything,” said Shook, who recommends bringing in long-term restorations and bigger projects this time of year to get them ready for spring.
Bonner County Bicycles is owned by three partners: Dan Shook, Dave Resisenauer and Tim Piehl.
Shook is a retired school teacher with knowledge of early bicycle models, including pre-war and early bikes, especially Schwinn, Columbia, and Elgin. Shook said his main claim to fame these days is being the father of the “Shook Twins” (musicians and identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook) and “Pa” to other local luminaries including Nicole Black and Zabrielle Dillon.
Reisenauer is a long-time Sandpoint resident and the former owner of The Flower Farm. He used to work at a premier bike shop in Portland, Ore., which he calls the bike capital of the nation.
Piehl is a Sandpoint native and the owner of two other local businesses, Homestake Construction and Design and Grouse Creek Property Management. He brings his enthusiasm for biking as a sport and knowledge of current trends in the biking industry, as well as a “get it done” attitude.
They also have a couple of other experienced mechanics that work with them occasionally on a contract basis. Greg Rawuka and Dick Ross occasionally lend a hand in the shop.
“Combined we probably have a couple hundred years of experience,” Shook said.
For more information, call Dan Shook, 208-597-5339; or Tim Piehl, 208-304-7868; or find them on Facebook. Their official address is 521 N. Fourth Ave., but the more accurate location to find them is on Poplar Street right behind Horizon Credit Union.
