COEUR d’ALENE — After 160 minutes between the Coeur d’Alene Vikings and Lake City Timberwolves, they’re still knotted up.
Thanks to that, they’ll see each other for a third time in a week on Saturday in the 5A Region 1 tournament.
And for idle Post Falls, Thursday’s result gave the Trojans the league title.
“The league was really tight this year,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “It was a one-point deal and came down to the last match.”
Gabe Nazemi scored in the 38th minute for visiting Coeur d’Alene and Jacob Janzen tied the match for Lake City in the 58th minute of a 1-1 draw at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
Coeur d’Alene (8-2-2, 3-1-2 5A IEL) will face Lake City (5-2-3, 3-1-2) again on Saturday, again at Lake City in a loser-out game.
“We had a large amount of the possession in the second half and didn’t convert,” Rich said. “We knocked one off the goalpost and their keeper (Shawn McKeeken) made some good saves.”
Post Falls (8-3, 4-2) will host Lewiston in the other regional opener on Saturday.
First half — 1, Cd’A, Gabe Nazemi (unassisted), 38:00. Second half — 2, LC, Jacob Janzen (Greyden Lee), 57:00.
Shots on goal — Cd’A 10, LC 12.
Saves — Cd’A, Shawn McKeeken 7; LC, Aidan Hassell 8.

COEUR d’ALENE — In a rare night match, the visiting Timberwolves did enough to lock up the top seed to regionals and the Vikings did enough to make it interesting when the postseason arrives.
Payton Barber scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute for Lake City, but Maddie Morris evened the scored in the 31st minute on an assist for Coeur d’Alene in a 5A Inland Empire League draw at Viking Field.
Lake City (6-1-4, 4-0-2 5A IEL) will host Lewiston and Coeur d’Alene (8-4-1, 4-1-1) will host Post Falls in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament. Both games are scheduled for Saturday at noon. Lake City, which beat visiting Coeur d’Alene last Saturday, needed only a tie Thursday night to claim the top seed.
“It was our girls’ senior night and the first time we’ve had the night game (against Lake City), and our girls came out fired up,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We cut back on some of the mistakes we made from last week and it was a really fun match to watch. We played hard, they played hard and it was a good match.”
