Balanced Eastmont powers past Sandpoint

SANDPOINT — Eastmont executed a balanced attack on offense with clean precision, and a hard hitting and swarming defense took care of the other half of the ball, leading the Wildcats to a decisive 41-6 win over the host Bulldogs in nonleague football action Friday night at Barlow Stadium.
Eastmont (2-4) struck first on their opening drive, as the quick and speedy Cameron Scaramozzino came wide open over the middle and took a nice post pass from Caelen Massey 91 yards for a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldog offense, which struggled to find any tempo or rhythm all night, was forced to punt for the second time and Payton Cox once again boomed a beautiful punt which rolled out at the three yard line.
The Wildcats one again marched the length of the field, mixing some misdirection runs with play action passes to open receivers, to take a 14-0 lead. The second touchdown came on a blown call by the official, as the Eastmont player fumbled on the three yard line and the ball bounced through the end zone, and should have been ruled a touch back.
Another 3-and out by the Bulldogs (1-6) on the ensuing possession gave Eastmont the ball back. Cal Wilcox had a nice sack on defense, but Eastmont schemed well to get their skill athletes the ball in space, and Scaramozzino took a tunnel screen and raced in from 18 yards out for a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Robbie Johnson had a couple of nice first half runs, but the Bulldogs couldn’t seem to get onto Eastmont’s half of the field, and were out-gained 281-75 yards in the first half. Massey threw his third touchdown of the half late, and the Wildcats took a 27-0 lead into half.
“That is a lot better team that a 1-4 record,” said Bulldog head coach George Yarno after the game. “Lakeland is a similar team to Eastmont. We’ll work on counters, sweeps and reverses.”
Scaramozzino scored his third touchdown of the game on a 55 yard scamper, and Massey’s fourth scoring pass made it 41-0 heading into the fourth quarter, which resulted in a running clock.
Running back Dillan Mitton had several nice carries late, including a three yard plunge to put the Bulldogs on the board in the final minute.
Eastmont finished with 203 yards rushing and 203 through the air, while the Bulldog quarterbacks were 4-18 passing for just 32 yards, and the ground game netted just 105 yards for a total of 137 on the night.
Perhaps the worst news for the Bulldogs, who host Lakeland next week in the first of the only two games that really matter for the playoffs, is that starter Robbie Johnson and backup Declan Plummer were both lost to injury, which meant third string sophomore Jaxon Pettit had to finish the game at quarterback. It’s too early to tell who might be able to play next Friday.
“We’ll see what the trainers say on those two guys,” said Yarno. “It’s next man up. We’ll come back to practice on Monday and get to work.”
Sandpoint hosts Lakeland next Friday in a league opener.
