Not everyone hated the rain, 3-year-old Steven Mackey enjoyed splashing through the muddle puddles in the parking lot of Oktoberfest on Saturday.

The weather just didn’t cooperate last Saturday while the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce hosted a day of festivities for Oktoberfest at the Old School House in Superior. The day was filled with family activities, food vendors and music. The Superior Swims committee also hosted a beer garden to raise funds for a new town swimming pool.

But frequent downpours put a damper on things.

“What can you do?” said Chamber member Suzanne Galiher. “Next year we hope to use the Old School House gym,” but it wasn’t available this year and so festivities had to work around the rain. Nightliner Duo, Bear and “Rockin’ Ricky” McKee played some tunes from inside Jackie’s Flowers as people filtered in and out of the beer gardens sampling local brews.

There was also a few food venues and Terry Zylawy did face painting for the kids. There was also a baking contest for items made with apples and pumpkin as well as a sauerkraut making contest. Loie Turner had tucked her table under an eave and moved a bucket under a stream of water pouring from the roof. She was selling pretzels and was heating them in a microwave that she was trying to shelter from the rain.

“Of course I’m the one with the microwave,” she laughed.

No major flooding as snow thaws

“As the ground starts thawing, the rocks start falling,” was a post made on the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page last week. A photo accompanied the post of a big rock which had come down on Mullan Road East near the Big Eddy fishing access in Superior on March 11. “Please be aware of your surroundings and pay attention while driving,” they warned in the post.
