RATHDRUM — A first-half goal by freshman midfielder Holly Ansley was all the Badgers needed to advance in their Intermountain League district soccer opener Monday at Sunshine Rotary Fields in Rathdrum.

Goalkeeper Emily Blackmore and the Bonners Ferry defense preserved the 1-0 shutout, although Priest River forward Karah Fink nearly tied the score late in the second half, with her breakaway shot attempt just wide of the left post.

“They had a good chance to equalize it, but overall, our defense had a great game,” Badgers coach Ed Moe said. “We’re starting to play better at the end of the season. We’re getting better with our passing and possessing the ball.”

Coeur d’Alene Charter 5, Bonners Ferry 0: Sarah Hines scored twice and Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy did not allow a shot on goal as the Panthers beat the Badgers in a semifinal game of the 3A District 1-2 girls soccer tournament Tuesday at Sunrise Rotary Fields.

Emily Blackmore had 14 saves for Bonners Ferry, which finished 5-10.

“Emily played awesome,” Moe said of his goalkeeper. “The loss knocked us out, but the girls played very well.”

The win clinches a berth to state for Coeur d’Alene Charter, the defending 3A state champions. The Panthers will play Timberlake, which also secured a berth to state on Tuesday, in the district championship game Thursday.

“Tonight was about doing a job to finish the season another step toward our overall goal,” Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “Bonners Ferry presented a tough, physical match throughout the entire game.”
