Fourth-generation Montanan and 22-year District Judge Russ Fagg made a stop in Kalispell Monday to announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

A small crowd gathered for Fagg’s announcement in front of the Flathead County Courthouse on the crisp, clear morning.

“It’s just about a perfect day in the Flathead Valley, and it’s an honor to be here,” Fagg said.

The Republican from Billings said he believes he has the best chance to unseat Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., in the election.

“I’m under no illusions for how difficult that is going to be. Senator Tester is a nice man, but Senator Tester is not voting Montana values,” Fagg said.

Fagg said his Montana values include limited government and personal responsibility.

As a judge, Fagg said he handled about 25,000 cases.

“I have a unique perspective that I think no other candidates have on what troubles Montanans,” he said. “I’ve seen chemical dependency. I’ve seen mental health issues. I’ve seen lack of opportunity. I’ve seen drop outs from school. But if there is one single thing that could solve these problems, it’s economic growth which will lead to poverty reduction.”

Fagg said if he elected Senator he will make decisions based on two questions.

“I will ask does this policy add to jobs or subtract from jobs? Does this policy help Montanans or hurt Montanans?”

In addition to being pro-jobs, Fagg said believes in the rights of the people to keep and bear arms. If elected, he hopes to work on balancing the budget and providing the best educational opportunity for children. Fagg also has a pro-life stance.

Fagg is facing a complaint before the Federal Election Commission alleging he released campaign material and launched a donation platform before filing for office or resigning his seat from the bench.

Fagg responded to these concerns in an editorial, saying the U.S. Senate exploratory committee had given him a “clean bill of health” by the Judicial Standards Commission, the pre-eminent authority on such matters.

State Auditor Matt Rosendale, state Sen. Al Olszewski and Bozeman businessman Troy Downing are seeking the GOP nomination, as well.

The primary is June 5 and general election is Nov. 6, 2018.
