Jean Alice Zachary

(Boyer), 83

Jean Alice Zachary (Boyer) went to her maker “Yahweh” at the age of 83 on Oct. 5, 2017, in Fortuna, Calif. Jean was born in Eureka, Calif., on Sept. 22, 1934, and grew up on the Boyer Ranch in Garberville, Calif. Jean loved school and graduated as valedictorian of her graduating class. Later in life she earned a bachelor’s degree at Humboldt State and then was an elementary school teacher for nearly 20 years. Most of those years were at Van Duzen Elementary in Dinsmore, Calif., where she retired.

Jean married Claude (Bud) Ivan Zachary, June 1952, a week after high school graduation. Soon after they wed, Bud was drafted and sent to the Korean War. While he was away, Jean helped her dad, George Boyer, build the Boyer Ranch House. When Bud returned they moved to Eureka and started their family.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Susan (Dave) Garnett, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; son, Kenneth (Cheryl) Zachary, of Hayden, Idaho; sisters, Marian King, of Meridian, Idaho, Florence (Terry) Wolf, of Deary, Idaho, and Donna Evans, of McKinleyville, Calif.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, George Edward Boyer and Margaret “Alice” Boyer; son David M. Zachary; and sisters Gail Brooks and Helen Simpson.

Jean was a leader and helper to her family and friends. She was very active in her church. She is loved by many and will be missed.

A Celebration of Jean’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2017, at Goble’s Mortuary, 560 12th St., Fortuna, Calif.
