Since 2003, Community Cancer Services in Sandpoint has been making an impact on the lives of those who hear the all too familiar phrase, “you have cancer.” Turning a person’s world upside down in an instant, the diagnosis not only affects the patient, but the loved ones as well.

Fortunately for those in North Idaho, Community Cancer Services offers both financial and emotional help to all those affected. “We have everything from one-on-one to group counseling for cancer patients, their caregivers and their children,” said Board President Stephanie Allen whose own son was diagnosed with cancer when he was in high school. “We offer financial assistance in many forms as well as a lending library for information and hats and wigs to help those who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. All the services are free of charge.”

Stephanie has been a part of CCS for many years, eager to provide support to others who find themselves facing the challenge of their lives. She finds it fulfilling, as do those past and present who have donated their time. But like many nonprofit organizations, it can be difficult recruiting volunteers to help with the tasks of running and sustaining a nonprofit.

“We currently have five board members and are looking to add more members of our community who would like to help make a difference,” said Allen.

The time commitment of a board member includes once a month board meetings and contributing to the work involved in putting on the fundraisers throughout the year, including the Mad Hatter Tea Party and CCS’s signature event A Night to Remember.

“We would like to build our board to a point that allows us to have various committees so that people can put their time and talent into a place that is the best fit for them,” said Allen.

If you are unable to volunteer your time, another way to support the mission of Community Cancer Services is to either donate an auction item or attend the annual Night to Remember that is taking place on November 4 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. “This year we have had more clients and disbursed more funds than any time in the past,” said Allen of the need of financial support. “We are at a critical level and really need the community’s support.”
