5A GIRLS: At this point, they’re used to it.
Playing the extra few minutes to get the desired result, Lake City isn’t afraid of those kind of outcomes.
They’ve won two state titles on penalty kicks, and lost one in 2015 in the same fashion.
“This program is used to those types of games,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We want to head into state and play the first match well, and see what that looks like after that. We’ll build off what happens and see what happens the rest of the way.”
Lake City (8-1-4) opens the tournament today against Eagle (11-5-2) at Meridian High.
“This program has prided itself on being ready to play its best soccer and building to that all the way through the season and be ready to play that way at the end of the season,” Ruchti said. “And they’ve continued to build on that tradition for this program. That’s what we do. They don’t hand out trophies in September or August. We prepare and try to do out best to get into a good position for October.”
Lake City hasn’t lost since Sept. 13 and Ruchti added the team turned a corner in a 2-1 win over Sandpoint on Sept. 25.
“Sandpoint’s a good team and we just kept battling and grinding it out.”
Rocky Mountain, who lost to Lake City in last year’s title game and beat Post Falls 1-0 in a play-in match last Saturday in Lewiston, opens with Borah.
5A BOYS: Post Falls hasn’t forgotten last year’s state tournament, even if they didn’t qualify for it.
Coeur d’Alene, last year’s runner-up, hasn’t either.
Both head south with some big goals this weekend.
Post Falls (10-3), which clipped Coeur d’Alene 2-0 in the Region 1 title game, advances to play at Rocky Mountain (9-3-5) of Meridian today.
“The end goal from the start of the season was to compete for a state title,” said Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson, whose team had to watch as games in the boys tournament were played at Post Falls last year. “And they’ve got a chance to do that. If they can play as organized and disciplined as they did (in the regional title game), we’ve got a shot at it.”
Coeur d’Alene (10-3-2) opens with Borah (12-4-1) at Eagle High. The Vikings lost two seniors — Austin Garitone and Justin Kofmehl — from last year’s team.
“Losing Austin and Justin was a real difficult thing,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “We didn’t lose a lot, but we lost that senior leadership and had to find it.”
Defending champion Boise (15-1-1) opens against Madison (7-8-2).
“Boise has scored a ton of goals and have its top two scorers back,” Lake said. “They’re definitely the favorite. And Rocky is really good as well. But I think both of us have a chance.”
“I think if we stick to our gameplan and stay very possession orientated and be creative, we have a chance,” Lawson said. “As long as we don’t break into bad habits with how we play, I think we’ll do great.”
4A BOYS: Skyview, who beat Ridgevue for the 4A boys title last year, opens against Wood River. Sandpoint, the Region 1 representative, will face Burley in the opening round.
4A GIRLS: Sandpoint — the Region 1 champion and last year’s runner-up — will open with Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls today at Brothers Park in Caldwell. Bishop Kelly, last year’s champion will face Skyline of Idaho Falls.
3A GIRLS: Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy has played in the last three state championship games, winning in 2014 and last year. Another title game appearance is a possibility. “This is a pleasant surprise,” second-year Panthers coach Stacy Smith said. “I knew we’d be OK, but I graduated eight seniors last year, and all of them started in that state championship game. I had some returning players, but we had to build again.” It helped that three freshmen earned starting jobs, including high-scoring forward Sarah Hines. “She adds speed, intensity, skill up top,” junior midfielder Elizabeth Lehosit said. “She gives our front line a confidence that we know if we get her the ball, she’s going to do something brilliant with it.” ... Coeur d’Alene Charter beat Community School of Sun Valley in the title game last year. This year, they could meet in the semifinals this year. Community School, like Charter, has no losses and just one tie this year. “We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Smith said. “The team we played in the state championship last year has done really, really well as well, and they’ve got a dominating scorer (Lily Fitzgerald) that will give our middle and back line a run for their money.” Charter, which started its program in 2012, is at state for the fifth straight year, and has brought home a trophy in each of its first four trips ... Timberlake is at state for the fourth straight year, looking for its fourth straight trophy. The Tigers were second to Charter in 2014, third in 2015 and won the consolation title last year. After his team lost 7-2 to Charter in the district final, Tigers coach Steve Michael said his team needed to make some adjustments. “Just our approach to the game, our quickness, our pace of play,” he said. “We’re a smart team, we just need to do things quicker.”
3A BOYS: Bonners Ferry won the District 1 title and will open with Weiser today at Vallivue High in Caldwell.
