'It's a Wonderful Life' now onstage at CHS

The story of George Bailey of Bedford Falls, N.Y., is one for all seasons, not just Christmas.
Recognizing this, the Coeur d’Alene High School Theatre Department’s production of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” opened Thursday and continues today, Saturday and Oct. 26, 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. at the school.
“It’s not only a joyful Christmas tale, it’s the gorgeous love story of George and Mary Bailey, a vivid portrait of the Greatest Generation, a descent into the darkest hour of a man trapped by circumstance, and a powerful meditation on what makes a meaningful life,” said a CHS Theatre Department announcement of the show.
Jimmy Stewart, who played George in the Frank Capra film, said in a 1973 interview that of all the movies he was in, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was his favorite.
In 1990, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in its National Film Registry.
The movie, which became a holiday classic in the 1970s, received multiple Academy Award nominations when it was released. The film continues to rank high on movies lists.
