MOSES LAKE — Almost exactly a year ago Moses Lake and Wenatchee played in a winner-to-state game at the Apple Bowl.

Moses Lake had its opportunities, but failed to score. A tremendous second-half goal went in Wenatchee’s favor that day.

Cut to Lions Field Thursday night.

Moses Lake pushed the pace in the first half and had plenty of attacks that just did not quite coalesce. On a sudden change of possession in the second half, Wenatchee midfielder Ariana Escobedo scored on a high shot in the 61st minute.

Sound familiar?

Escobedo’s goal was the difference as Wenatchee edged Moses Lake 1-0 to clinch the Columbia Basin Big Nine league championship.

“That’s our sister team. That’s our mirror team,” head coach Ric Char said. “We’re going to battle every single time and I’m just proud of the girls for improving from the 4-0 loss that we had early in the season at Wenatchee so the girls battled hard tonight and I’m super proud of them.”

The constant rain and the level of play kept scoring chances at a premium.

In the ninth minute, Cora Bruneel angled a free kick into the box, but Abby Rathbun’s header did not have enough force to get into the net.

Wenatchee countered four minutes later when Ashley Turner got an open look after a defender slipped, however her shot sailed wide left.

Neither team mounted much of an attack in the opening 20 minutes of the second half.

Madi Krogh used her speed on a through ball in the 59th minute, but the play was narrowly broken up by Wenatchee’s goalie.

Wenatchee stifled three consecutive corner kicks near the end of the game.

“It wasn’t our way this night,” Char said. “We had our great opportunities to finish and score tonight. If even one of those went in it would be a totally different ballgame.”

Moses Lake finishes its regular season home for Eisenhower and on the road against Sunnyside. The Chiefs would likely tie with West Valley for second in the CBBN with two wins. The Rams are ahead in points, which would break the tie.

Second half — 1, W, Escobedo, 61:00.
