COEUR d’ALENE — Police in Coeur d’Alene arrested five people on domestic violence charges Thursday as part of a sweep that coincided with similar efforts across the nation.

Four teams from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department participated in the nationwide domestic violence sweep coordinated by the Clackamas (Wash.) County Sheriff’s Office that used local warrants to round up five offenders.

Despite its effort, the department had a fistful of warrants that went unserved after the three and four-officer teams knocked on doors, visited favorite haunts and spent Thursday actively looking for fugitives.

“We check houses, places of employment, anyplace we know the suspect is likely to be,” Detective Jared Reneau said.

The department used a sergeant, five officers and four detectives to track 20 domestic violence-related warrants and follow up on 14 no-contact and protection orders to make sure estranged domestic partners who have orders to stay away from each other aren’t violating the orders, Reneau said.

“We check residents to make sure the respondents aren’t at the house.”

Protection orders are usually victim initiated and no-contact orders are ordered by a judge.

In the process of its 51 attempts to serve domestic violence warrants during the emphasis, police also served two warrants not related to the sweep, according to the department.

The Coeur d’Alene department was the only Idaho police department to participate in the annual sweep that began 15 years ago. It is the second year the department has joined the effort.

“Criminals don’t stop at city lines or county lines,” Reneau said. “Having coordinated efforts is useful to help locate and arrest people who have warrants.”
