SANDPOINT — Three suspects in a pair of burglaries last weekend made initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Thursday.

David Anthany Dorland Jr., Christian Don Moes and Dylan Lane Utt are each charged with one count of burglary. Dorland faces an additional felony charge of malicious injury to property for causing an estimated $1,500 in damages while breaching the door of Wrenco Arms and smashing in a display case, according to court records.

Dorland was ordered held in lieu of $4,000 bail, while bail for Moes and Utt was set at $1,000 apiece. Judge Tera Harden appointed public defenders to represent each of the defendants, court records show.

Dorland was immediately identified as a suspect, according to a Sandpoint Police probable cause affidavit. Detective Skyler Ziegler said in the affidavit that he recognized Dorland from prior contacts with law enforcement.

Police confronted Dorland, who admitted he was behind the break-in and allowed officers to search his Lake Street home in order to recover a stolen Heckler & Koch .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol. However, Moes concealed the handgun, which retails for more than $1,000, in a field but subsequently led officers to its location, the affidavit said.

Dorland, 25, told officers that he used a hammer, a rock and his feet to pierce through laminated security glass on a front door. Once inside, a display case was shattered to gain access to its contents, the affidavit said.

Dorland, the affidavit said, identified Moes and Utt of a burglary of the Subway sandwich shop in strip mall along U.S. Highway 2 on Sunday, the same night he broke into Wrenco arms. Video from that break-in showed a store window being dropped with a rock, suspects vaulting the counter and rifling through bank deposit bags which happened to be empty. The store’s cash register was locked and didn’t appear to be disturbed.

Lane, 22, and Utt, 25, are on felony probation, which leaves them subject to searches by authorities. The search did not turn up any swag from the Subway break-in, although it did uncover clothing — including a T-shirt fashioned into a hood — that was seen on the surveillance footage, the affidavit said.

Moes and Utt are also being held on agent’s warrants for violating the terms of their probation. Utt is on probation for felony injury to a child, while Moes is on probation for felony drug possession, according to the Idaho Supreme Court Data Repository.
