Vikings 'truck' Trojans

COEUR d’ALENE — If the Post Falls Trojans didn’t get the number(s) of the Coeur d’Alene Vikings truck that hit them Friday night, here’s some help:
No. 70 (Jackson Kohal).
No. 35 (Ross Chadderdon, twice).
No. 58 (Gabe Zanetti).
If those crunching hits weren’t enough for the Trojans, Colson Yankoff and Caleb Beggerly of Coeur d’Alene jolted them with a series of runs through and around their defense, and Cole Ramseyer did the same in the receiving game.
An expected showdown for the 5A Inland Empire League football title turned into a rout in a hurry, with second-ranked Coeur d’Alene pummelling No. 3 Post Falls 59-29 at Viking Field.
“We had a message (to send); we definitely had something to prove,” said Beggerly, who ran for four touchdowns, and also had an interception, caused in part by a big hit on the quarterback by Chadderdon.
Coeur d’Alene (7-2, 3-0 5A IEL), earned a first-round bye in the state 5A playoffs, which begin next week. The Vikings will host either Meridian (4-5) or Madison (6-3) in two weeks in a quarterfinal game.
Post Falls (8-1, 2-1) will play host to Rocky Mountain (7-2) of Meridian next week in a first-round playoff game. Eagle, Borah and Rocky tied for first in the West B pod of the Southern Idaho Conference. Eagle won the coin flip for the No. 1 seed, and Borah is the No. 2 seed.
“That bye week is big,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “To be able to stay at home, and the draw is better. And a league title is nice.”
With Washington Huskies coach Chris Petersen watching from the sidelines, Yankoff, a verbal commit to the U-Dub, passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 146 yards and two scores.
Beggerly ran for 152 yards and four touchdowns on just 12 carries. Ramseyer, a tight end and Boise State commit, caught eight passes for 126 yards and a pair of scores.
“In all phases of the game, pretty happy against a real good Post Falls team,” Amos said. “We’ve got to carry that momentum now.”
After punting on its first possession, Coeur d’Alene scored on its next six possessions, three of them coming after Post Falls turnovers.
Kohal forced a fumble by Trojan quarterback Nate Buer, and the Vikings recovered at the Post Falls 33. Yankoff ran in from 2 yards out, and Beggerly ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Three plays later, Chadderon smashed into Buer, whose deep pass was picked off by Beggerly. Six plays later, Yankoff found a wide-open Ramseyer for a 25-yard TD pass and a 15-0 lead.
Beggerly’s 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter made it 23-0.
Late in the first half, a long kickoff return by Taylor Ryan set Post Falls up at the Viking 15. Braden Vaughan scored from 5 yards out three plays later to cut Coeur d’Alene’s lead to 32-14 with 1:22 left in the half.
But that ended up leaving the Vikings just enough time to score and wrest the momentum back. Yankoff marched Coeur d’Alene 73 yards in 61 seconds, with Yankoff keeping the ball for the final 3 yards, and the Vikings led 38-14 at halftime.
Coeur d’Alene ran for 366 yards, and outgained Post Falls 590-389. But yards were harder to come by for the fast-paced Trojan offense on Friday night, and Buer was under pressure much of the night.”
“They had a little different scheme,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said of the Vikings. “They had a whole bunch of guys deep, and we were having a hard time throwing the ball down the field to some of our weapons. And at the same time, their front five or six did a good job against our run. It took us a while to find a couple of runs that were successful.”
