Elks honor community's top students

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has recognized the region’s top students of the month.
To be selected as an Elk’s student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.
The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.
Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships.
The Elks are the third largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.
Recognized at Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High School is Hailey Gant. Recognized at Sandpoint High School are Ronald Korn III and Katherine Kaul.
- Hailey Gant
The daughter of Heather Cohick and Jonathan Gant, Hailey Gant is a senior at Clark Fork High School. She currently has a 3.5 GPA.
Her dream, Gant said, is to go to Boise State University and major in accounting. “I have always been good with numbers and accounting seems like the best fit for me,” she wrote in a letter to the Elks.
Gant is taking six college courses this semester and will continue that next semester as well.
In addition, she has been job shadowing at Clyde’s Towing, which she said has given her real life experience in accounting and business.
“I have a very supportive school and family that has helped me to reach my goals and be who I want to be,” she said.
- Ronald Harry Korn III
The son of Ron and Kelly Korn, he is a senior at Sandpoint High School.
His various activities include pep band, symphonic band, steel pan band, Business Professionals of America, CyberPatriot, Math Club, and ACES Workshop (part of the North Idaho High School Aerospace Program.)
In addition, he work as an IT intern for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.
Among Korn’s achievements are being student president of the ACES Work-shop and Cyber-Patriot, part of a two-time state wining CyberPatriot team, earning fourth and fifth at Business Professionals of America in PC Servicing and Computer Networking, respectfully. He has also helped complete the Zodiac 601XL the ACES Workshop has built since he was a freshman, accumulating over 300 hours of work on that project.
He is ranked 30th in his class out of 231 students with a GPA of 4.185.
- Katherine Kaul
The daughter of Kim and Travis Kaul, the Sand-point High School senior participates in cross country, basketball, and track. In addition, she is the secretary of the Math Club and secretary/treasurer of the National Honors Society. For academics, she has a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and is ranked first in my class.
Kaul said she is interested in medical research and genetics.
“Both of these areas have plenty of opportunities for further scientific discovery, and the knowledge gained for such research can benefit many people,” Kaul added.
