Frederick ‘Fritz’ George Loats, 66

Frederick “Fritz” George Loats, an Attorney at Law and longtime resident of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, died unexpectedly at the age of 66. Fred was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 3, 1951 to Eldon “Bud” and Joanne Loats, the second of five children. He graduated with the class of ’73 from the University of Iowa and continued his education in law at Rutgers University, class of ’77. He then traveled with a suitcase in hand to Coeur d’Alene, to take the Idaho State Bar exam, and had been practicing law for more than 40 years in the area.

Fred was a man of great stature with a high moral integrity who was passionate about criminal defense and ensuring that the laws were justly served. In his spare time he enjoyed working with his hands, landscaping, golf, fishing and duck hunting, as well as reading historical novels and Ducks Unlimited. He had a love for animals and would always be willing to take in the strays. Most of all, his favorite pastime was time spent with this granddaughter, Ashten. His favorite CLE “course” was the Idaho State Bar Golf tournament with his peers. He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, where his family lived for two years in the late 1950s.

Fred is greatly missed by his family of his heart: Aimee Hall; Mark (Angaleka) Hall and family; Summer Sweet, and granddaughter, Ashten Clapper (who was the light of his life); his two sisters, Elizabeth (Gary) Peckham of Wisconsin, Sara (Mike) Adams of Colorado; brother, Andrew (Ellie) Loats of New Jersey; three nieces; four nephews; and the many who knew him both professionally and personally. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Joanne; brother, Gregory; beloved doggie, Frances “Frannie” Loats; and many of his cats.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2017 at the upstairs of the Coeur d’Alene Eagles. In lieu of flowers and gifts, donations and condolences may be sent to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835, or a charitable fund of your choice.

Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. You may visit Fred’s online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com
